2024 Winter Solstice | Sharing Warmth with Dumplings, Bringing Care to Rural Communities

Every Winter Solstice, Synear’s charity initiative makes a heartfelt visit to those in need. This year marks the ninth consecutive year of our dedicated efforts.

A Morning in Rural Henan: A Teacher’s Mission of Love

As dawn breaks and mist lingers over the wheat fields, the school bell rings at Lianzhuang Primary School in Hanjizhen, Xincai County, Zhumadian City.

Just a few months ago, Wang Qianqian became the new principal of this rural school. While the saying goes, “A new official brings three fires,” she has had to take on the roles of three people by herself. This small village school, with just over twenty children, reflects the broader challenges of rural education—limited resources, outdated facilities, a shortage of teachers, and a lack of parental engagement in their children’s education. The overwhelming responsibilities of renovating classrooms, structuring the curriculum, and ensuring students receive proper meals have already caused her to lose over ten pounds.

Yet, despite these challenges, she believes that visibility brings change. Unlike her previous school, this one faces significantly greater hardships, but she remains determined. She regularly films and shares videos of the children laughing, playing, and expressing gratitude for the kindness of others. She says, “I don’t just want people to see dusty, worn-out kids—I want them to see happy, lively children full of dreams. I’m never afraid of mischievous kids, but I do fear children who remain silent. Not every child will grow up to be successful, but every child deserves love.”

In just two months, her care and companionship have filled the once-quiet campus with the joyful sound of reading and learning. Through social media, she has documented daily life at the school, ensuring that migrant worker parents can stay connected to their children while also bringing attention to the realities of rural education.

When she learned that Synear Charity would be visiting her school again this year, bringing warm clothing, delicious food, and gifts for the children, she hesitated for a moment before making a humble request in her local Henan dialect:

“I feel bad asking, but just five kilometers away, at Hanwangzhuang Primary School, there’s another group of children I worry about. I’d love to get them some warm winter coats too.”

Her selfless plea deeply moved us. Here was a young teacher, devoting herself entirely to advocating for the well-being of rural children. Her kindness and sincerity reinforced Synear Charity’s responsibility to extend our support even further.

Nourishing the Future: Food, Warmth, and Education

During this charity visit, Synear Foods focused on improving children’s nutrition by donating refrigeration equipment to the school, ensuring that students have access to fresh and safe meals every day. The children also had the chance to enjoy delicious shrimp dumplings, pig-shaped buns, and “Fortune Bringer” tangyuan (glutinous rice balls).

After the meal, our Synear Charity volunteers distributed food safety education booklets—“Knowledge is Power”. Since 2023, Synear Charity has used illustrated storybooks to help children better understand the importance of food safety and nutrition, bridging gaps in their knowledge about healthy eating habits.

A Young Village Leader’s Vision: Bringing Life Back to Rural Communities

“Come on, everyone! It’s time for Winter Solstice dumplings!”

This enthusiastic call came from Zhang Guifang, the village secretary of Sanjia Village, Shilin Town, Shancheng District, Hebi City. Born in 1997, she returned to her hometown four years ago, taking on the role of the village’s youngest-ever leader—despite facing skepticism and resistance.

Her first order of business? Painting vibrant murals across the village walls, turning the once-quiet town into an internet-famous destination. Thanks to her relentless efforts, Sanjia Village has since boomed as a local attraction, drawing visitors and revitalizing the community.

Over the past four years, she has led the villagers in building roads, launching businesses, and attracting investment. With unstoppable energy and bold ideas, she has breathed new life into what was once a struggling village.

“Look at this—our very own village grandpa cosplay crew! Our men’s and women’s groups are pretty cool, don’t you think?” she jokes.

While young people leave for big cities to chase their dreams, the elderly and the land they leave behind should not be forgotten. She chose to stay and care for the community, proving that rural life can be just as dynamic and meaningful.

In Sanjia Village, nearly 400 elderly residents remain, forming the spiritual backbone of the village. While they don’t struggle for food or clothing, loneliness often weighs heavily on them.

This Winter Solstice, Synear Charity organized a lively village banquet, bringing warm bowls of dumplings and tangyuan to brighten their day. As the elderly villagers curiously admired the symbolic “Good Fortune Persimmon Tangyuan” and “Prosperity Tangyuan”, their faces lit up with smiles.
